Schools in Vetka
Since the inception of W.O.V.A. there have been very close links with the schools in the town. Over the years a number of English teachers from the Vetka schools have spent 6 weeks of the summer holidays in West Oxfordshire staying with members of W.O.V.A. and their friends. The main purpose of the visits has been for the teachers to improve their English language skills which in turn have benefited the children in Vetka.
In recent years the children from schools No1 and No 2 have been involved in a Christmas card design competition the winners of which have had their work printed on Christmas cards sold in aid of W.O.V.A. funds for the work of the charity.
A very successful Injury Minimisation Programme for Schools, (IMPS), a series of basic life support lessons, has been implemented in the schools and kindergartens over the past two years. This has been so well received that it has spread out from the young people into the wider community.
There have been some links with Schools in West Oxfordshire and Bromsgrove in the West Midlands. It is hoped that staff from Bromsgrove will be able to visit Vetka in the summer of 2008 in preparation for and exchange visit of students in 2009/10.
On a recent visit to the schools a number of pairs of dance shoes were taken for the students who are very keen on their dancing and leotards for the Kindergarten schools with whom we also have links. A large number of books and colourful posters, in English, have also been supplied to the schools covering a wide range of subjects including, English, Maths, Wildlife/Nature, Science, Biology etc.
Each visit has opened up new avenues of contact and exchanges of ideas and we hope this will continue into the future.
